Shared note

Robert was born in June 1834 on lot 12, Conc. 2 Nassagaweya Twp. inHalton county. His parents Joseph Anderson and Martha Ross had emigratedfrom County Armagh, Ireland in 1830 and settled on this lot assquatters. A lease was secured in January of 1834 on 200 acres from theClergy Corporation. There is a record that Joseph Anderson paid thepatent fee on the 18th of January of 1833. In 1835 Joseph gave up hislease to the southern half of the property to William McCurdy " for avaluable consideration to me in hand paid". The family was in very poorcircumstances. Most settlers would not choose to lease a lot when landwas still relatively cheap. The land was laden with stones small andlarge. The large stones were moved to the fence lines and the smallerones remained an impediment to cultivation. This farm today is mostlyapple orchard. His father walked the 18 miles to Wellington Square, nowBurlington for needed items. A horse was too expensive and they did nothave any horses until much later.

Robert's education was much neglected in this backwoods district so hewas unable to read or write. His younger brothers and sisters came alongin time to benefit from the changes introduced by Egerton Ryerson in 1843.

Robert was eight years younger than his brother William and eleven yearsyounger than his eldest brother John. By the time Robert was sixteenyears old John had already married and it is supposed left the farm toearn his own living. This would mean that William and Robert would be assisting their fatherto operate the farm. When Robert was about fourteen his brother Williammarried and perhaps Robert was the one that his father depended upon.Robert did have a younger brother, Joseph but he was 12 years younger.

The assessment records show that Robert paid the taxes from the year1857. This was the year following his marriage to Nancy McPhedran. Theywere married on the 6th of November 1856 in Eramosa, Puslinch township,in Wellington county by the Reverend Collins, the Methodist Episcopalminister. Nancy was born and raised in Nassagaweya township on the Guelphline, lot 24, concession 3, east half. Her father John McPhedran and hermother Janet Campbell were both natives of Argyllshire, Scotland havingemigrated to Canada with their parents.

The 1861 census provides some insight concerning Robert's paying the farmtaxes. His father Joseph recorded his occupation as that of weaver, andit seems that he was unable to do heavy physical work and left theoperation of the farm to the recently married Robert. Indeed Josephdied in December of 1862 at the relatively young age of 62.

Under the terms of his father's will Robert became the owner of the farm. The 1861 census records that there were two homes on the 100 acre lot.Robert and Nancy and their family lived in a single storey log house.Joseph and Martha and their youngest son Joseph lived in a storey and ahalf log house.

In 1857 Nancy's parents moved to Plympton township in Lambton county, this was the year following Nancy's marriage. The attraction of Lambtoncounty must have been considerable, because by 1868 Robert and Nancy andtheri young family had also moved to Lambton county.
